In the second minute an exciting break started by Nieva saw Kemp release Montella whose attempt to square for Gabor to tap in was just short. Peckham had clearly been instructed to shoot early. Ide Hill’s threat was confined to set pieces and the odd opportunity to break. After an early shot went wide from Ide Hill’s number 10, Peckham largely dominated possession and territory. So much of the early pattern of the game was familiar from the season so far. The same midfield – Thomas and Kemp flanked by Nieva and Dowding – was in front of a back four with one enforced change, Whittaker making his debut in place of the injured Carrick, with Meta and Matthews at full back. But Peckham had at least shown more of an attacking threat in that most recent defeat, and again paired Gabor with Montella up front after the latter’s return from Fisher. While the hosts came into the game having lost 2-0 away to Chipstead on Saturday, the visitors had spent Saturday at their barbecues contemplating two wins and a draw from their opening three games. Basically, despite playing well in all games, sloppy goals have been conceded and results have been poor and, well… Peckham really wanted to win this game. Rather than digging through the programmes, I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that we never lost five out of four in the 30-odd years prior to that. Sadly (or maybe not) the FA were not all that quick off the mark the online FA records that I found began in 2015/16, and a quick trawl through them suggests the start to the 22/23 season – played and lost four – is Peckham Town’s worst. Football began in 1982, when Bryan Hall lashed a notice to a tree saying “Players Wanted”. Some will have you believe that football began in 1992. Here’s the official match report by Dominic Smith: Catching up with our coverage of what has been an appalling start to the season, here’s some photos and a full match report from Peckham Town’s first win of the season, coming on the back of four straight defeats.
